Mongezi Ncombo`s biography

 

Mongezi Ncombo was born in the Eastern Cape, Mthatha on the 03 March 1987. In 2003, he participated in the Nelson Mandela`s young artists sculpture project, where he was exposed to the art training for the first time. He created a bust of the late president Nelson Mandela and also created one huge bust as a collective of the young artists. He studied the Visual Art and Design in the Central Johannesburg College and completed N5 in 2010. In 2010, he enrolled as a Saturday student in Printmaking at the Artist Proof Studio. In December 2010, he exhibited in a group exhibition for the Arts and Culture festival at the Port St` Johns Museum. In 2011, he moved to the weekday`s printmaking program at the Artist Proof Studio. He exhibited at the Johannesburg Art Gallery for the “The coming of age” exhibition at the Artist proof studio`s 21st anniversary. In 2012, he exhibited at the Artist Proof Studio gallery for the 3rd year exhibition titled “I reflect”. In 2014, he worked at the Paterson Recreation Centre, African Street Paper Art, in Norwood, Johannesburg in Paper mache, painting, and drawing. In 2015 he worked at the My Epic South African Way studio as a screen printer and a sales assistance. In 2016, he participated in a group exhibition titled “The African geometrics” at the Johannesburg City Library exhibition area. In 2016, he started exhibiting his artworks at the City Perk Café and found clients that found joy in his artworks. In 2016, he collaborated with Lungisa Matubatuba in creating a sculpture “The egg concept” for the violence against children campaign that was commissioned by Save the Children South Africa. In 2017, he Lieshout, Lungisa matubatuba, he participated in an exhibition titled “Rhythmic Cluster” as the Michaelis Art collective, mentored by Mathijs Lieshout. He also worked with Mathijs Lieshout on an installation project titled “To build” which took place in the Johannesburg City Library as a constructor. Mongezi Ncombo conducted the children`s art classes at the Michaelis Art studio on Saturdays in the Johannesburg City Library. In 2017, he is participated as a full time artist in an Art exchange program at One Eloff Studios. In 2018, he participated in a mentorship program at the M Studio. He is recently exhibiting at the Mpho Art and Design. He is currently working at 95 Commissioner Street, Marshalltown, Johannesburg as a full time artist
