Galah reflection: Precious water
by Susan Willemse

Description:

Artists are often influenced by environmental events and this artwork is no exception. When we arrived in Australia eleven years ago, there was a severe 10-year drought. This did not stop us appreciating native birds drinking in pools of water. Cape Town now has severe water restrictions as their dams are dry and again I was reminded how precious water is. These birds would literally die of thirst if the water was not available. Water affects everything from hygiene, to the fact that most of our cells in our bodies are actually water, to the floods that occur in extreme weather patterns, it is more precious than gold. I hope that you appreciate this little fellow, he had his entire head underwater at one stage and the water was so calm that you could see his reflection perfectly. It is these small special moments that make you realize the bigger pictures in life.
